Aquarius Archives is a working group of Nimbin Aquarius Foundation Inc. (NAFI). NAFI is a community, grass-roots, not-for-profit registered charity since 1993, whose purpose is to advance culture.
Aquarius Archives is dedicated to collecting, cataloguing, preserving, and providing access to materials relating to the unique and significant cultural heritage of Nimbin Aquarius. We collect materials that are primarily about, or which otherwise reflect on or have impact on the experience, history, lives, heritage and interests of Nimbin and surrounding communities in light of social change movements beginning here around 1973.
The first vision for the 1973 Nimbin Aquarius Festival was “that the style of the festival, the structures and forms of the community that make up the festival itself be an artform”. That vision still lives today, with the same community still thriving in Nimbin village, a living artform renowned around Australia and the world. Most volunteers at the Aquarius Archives are creative artists in their own right, with the passion, drive and understanding to keep our rich and diverse stories alive. We thrive in the generative synergy between best practice archiving and participatory creativity, with the community.
Aquarius Archives provides a high-quality community cultural resource and attraction for the Nimbin village. We encourage social cohesion and community resilience by stimulating valuable, meaningful and authentic visitor engagement for those coming from near and far. We aim to provide safe and secure access to the collections, including meaningful exhibitions and events to celebrate Aquarius values and lifestyle with the Nimbin community and the world.
We’ve been gathering together side-by-side with the Bundalung Community since the 1973 Festival, and honour our many shared stories together.
We foster viable, life affirming opportunities to re/connect with each other and the Earth by learning with the precedent set by exemplary Nimbin Aquarius Elders and their thriving intentional communities around Nimbin.
